Famous for tossing bags of gold into an open window at night to save three poor young women who had no dowry and thus couldn’t marry, from prostitution and slavery. The bags of gold landed near their stockings which were set out by the fireplace to dry. Sound familiar?
When I lived in Delft, Holland 1979-80, I learned about this day. Sinterklass and Zwarte Piet arrived in the town square on horse back. Zwarte Piet was the stern guy! Children put their wooden shoes by the fireplace and usually receive a large chocolate initial for their name.
Thank you for sharing that! I didn’t go into how St. Nicholas arrived by boat in Spain and then traveled to the Low Countries on a white horse or his stern sidekick Black Peter. Perhaps next year! For several years when my children were young we baked St. Nicholas shaped sugar cookies each December 6th.
Does anyone come from a background, current country or culture that celebrates St. Nicholas Day? Do you have fond memories from childhood? Are you continuing this custom in your own family?
