When I lived in Delft, Holland 1979-80, I learned about this day. Sinterklass and Zwarte Piet arrived in the town square on horse back. Zwarte Piet was the stern guy! Children put their wooden shoes by the fireplace and usually receive a large chocolate initial for their name.

Thank you for sharing that! I didn’t go into how St. Nicholas arrived by boat in Spain and then traveled to the Low Countries on a white horse or his stern sidekick Black Peter. Perhaps next year! For several years when my children were young we baked St. Nicholas shaped sugar cookies each December 6th.
