This essay is beautiful. I've never considered September as a time for lament perhaps because I was distracted by the beginnings of a new school year and the rush of all the holiday preparations. I so appreciate how you slow the clock down for me, reminding me to pause and be present to what is happening all around me.

Hello Mary! So glad to see you popping into the comments. We live with lots of calendars, or wheels of time. The academic calendar is certainly one that is a time of “new beginnings” . But beginnings and endings can be paradoxically the same and September is the month to unravel that mystery. I hope you can slow down and be present it’s such a glorious month.

Thank you for sharing this beautifully written piece. The way you unravel the deep layers of the Persephone, Demeter, and Hecate myth brings such clarity to the bittersweet nature of this season. Your reflections on lament, loss, and the cycles of life resonate deeply, especially the idea of embracing lament as a healing process. It’s a reminder to honor the passing of time, the changes we face, and the beauty that comes from letting go. This message feels like an invitation to align with the rhythms of nature and find peace in the inevitability of change.

Hi Janet, Lament seems to be a lost art and experience in our culture though it's one worth reviving.

Beautiful piece Jan. I love following the seasons depths. This is one story/myth that calls profoundly to me, and I love how you unpacked its many intricate messages. Lamenting is a powerful alchemy. Allowing in the wilting, fading away. This is how I feel about aging. Aging is a beautiful burrowing into life, until the final relinquishment. And I lament all that dwindles and ebbs...

HI Julie, I love the words you chose to use here: wilting, fading, relinquishment, dwindle and ebb. They are all so perfect for this season.

Hello Melissa, thanks for taking a moment to comment. Collage is such a fascinating method of expression. Every image whether from books, magazines or special themed papers can be infused with levels of meaning to tell a story or express an idea that can’t quite be said in any other way.

Hi Jenna, thanks for being here and reading today’s essay. That collage of Persephone is quite old, some of the first creative depth work I did as I began this practice. As it turned out themes from the myth of Persephone were what came up. It wasn’t intentional it was simply what I needed. The impact of that myth can’t be overestimated.
