Loved this! Beautiful writing. I bought the book, Mary Magdalene Revealed by Megan Watterson. If my house were on fire, it would be one of the first books I grabbed as I run from my house. I'm glad the feminine voices are coming up more now. I just wonder how many of them are still out there that never got saved in any library (Nag Hamadi or caves of Qumran). How many women even wrote gospels back then? I'm at least glad we are finding the ones we have found.

Richness here, Jan, and so much to take in. I love being reminded of the connection between the ripeness of earth in summer and the ripeness of fertility and femininity. This > "Our entire collective human heart longs for the feminine in the form of a Great Mother." I think is what makes most of us feel so fulfilled when we spend time in nature. And, then to also check in with the perpetual dance between light and dark, knowing that each are essential to wholeness - is such an important part of our reality to acknowledge. Only from that vantage point are we able to move through our challenges toward gratitude. Much appreciated!

Hello Elizabeth, it’s the beginning of such a bountiful and rich time of year isn’t it? I agree Nature, indeed Mother Earth, is often the answer to that longing for the arms of the eternal and divine Mother.

I absolutely loved this, Jan. The way you followed your thread, the wonderful research and personal insight, not to mention your stunning artwork. Thinking about the season of the Black Madonna, I’m always mindful of Assumption on 15 August, also known as Our Lady of Harvest. With the 13 day time slip due to the calendar change, seasonal conditions on 15 August are the same as they would have been on 28 August prior to 1752 - by which time there is a sense of over-ripeness, decay, returning to earth and also the elderberries are plump and squashy - all very Black Madonna I feel!

Hi Imogen I’ll have more to say about the unusual and particular beauty of decay in the coming weeks. And Mary Mother of (or bestower of) Grain and the Assumption on Aug. 15 all underscore the deep connections of land, grain, sustenance and harvest that can be traced back to Demeter/Ceres and even further.

I appreciate your well-researched and thoughtful article. I understand and feel the wisdom in rejecting dualism and investigating the “dark” elements in all of us. We are richer for integrating the dark. Congratulations for all the wonderful articles you write.
