I guess for me I’ve kept that silliness and am sometimes myself seen as silly (and I’ve traditionally had blonde hair to boot ;0 ). However something in me has been so connected/committed to the “other than human” realm, that I’d rather suffer the shame from humans & the isolation often felt than turn away from what feels like part of my soul. It’s never changed in me- I’m definitely more open about it now as an adult and am grateful that Jan helps me to put words and bring clarity to what I’ve felt and have been. I guess my first encounter with faery/deva was with snow in Canada in kindergarten. It’s funny because I still have a little Jack Frost bite tattoo on my face. Winter has always been “my time”- the Snow Child book brought understanding to what I had always felt. I grew up on all kinds of skis and continued my love of Nordic skiing as an adult. For the past several years, I’ve been trying to find a spot closer to snow than where I live. Naturally I’m human ;0 , however my affinity for snow has been its own type of relationship that I really don’t understand in a “conscious-ness” kind of way. However, I’d like to know more about snow devas.
What a wonderful essay! I believe in nature spirits, elementals, and angelic beings. I work with angels all the time, and I leave honey out for the house brownie even though it sounds silly to some people. I don’t have a house anymore (in the process of moving), but I hope the elementals in my house will move with us!
People from generations past wander down to our river’s edge. Sensing them out of the corner of my eye as they approach startles me. They disappear before I can completely see them.
I too have been fascinated with our relationship with nature...of which we are part. I noticed that the orchids in my kitchen window rebloomed every year despite my giving them little attention. So I made a faerie house out of paper, sticks, lavender and a crystal and hung it in the window. The next time they bloomed they all grew TOWARDS the faerie house! So I started making more of them, understanding that they were symbolic invitations to let spirits know I welcomed them. Being an artists and graphic designer, I was inspired to make a book with patterns and directions for others to make their own faerie houses! Thank you for your story. I wish I had your ability to get so much information about all that we have invisibly living with us!
It’s so refreshing to see that I’m not the only little girl that felt the closeness of these spirits! As a child I was accused of and told that I needed to stop daydreaming. I have always been artistic and creative. It’s taken me this long at the age of 67 to acknowledge that my childhood experiences were indeed and still are very real! Thank you Jan! 😊❤️
Hi Rebecca, I'm convinced that what we "know" in childhood is closer to the actual truth of things than all of the "facts" we learn in school. I think it's also true that the older we get the more we circle back to how we experienced reality as a young child. We're closer to crossing back through the veil to where we started and I think we start to remember important knowledge we had forgotten.
I absolutely agree! It’s a shame that as children we are taught to abandon all this, taught to “grow up.” Funny, I feel as if I am finally “growing up!”
What a gift you are to your readers. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I had a friend who is a gifted channel between worlds. She helped clear my house by asking the angels, elementals or overlighting devas connected to my land to help clear it. And she told me she goes to a local pond most days to receive insight from the overlighting devas. So one day I was at the Indian Rock Shelter trail with my dog Max. A place I find to be truly sacred with the rock shelters the Native Americans held their rituals. As Max was taking a dip in the pond, I thought to ask the overlighting deva for a message since I had never done that before. I heard back "Get the hell out of here." Stunned and embarassed that I had stepped into yet another area I should not be in, I walked away only to feel very strongly, "Now you know what it's like not to be loved." Many spiritual beings are present in the forest and waters and once again I realized the importance of having great reverence and respect for their journeys.
Hi Laurian, Your experience at the Indian Rock Shelter, (which I'm embarrassed to say I've never visited, even though it's nearby) reminds me of a similar experience a friend had at a stone circle in Ireland. She has quite a bit of English heritage and when she approached the sacred circle and asked for permission to enter she was flatly denied! I also experienced something similar long ago when "claiming/commanding" healing for my son who has a lifelong disability. I was, in no uncertain terms put in my place. It was made very clear to me that I was way overstepping my bounds and was not in a position to be claiming or commanding anything. We, locked into this material world and plane of density that obscures the more subtle realms, can be very foolish sometimes and the higher beings suffer no fools! We have so much to learn.
Absolutely, we have a lot to learn. I continue to wrestle with the idea of connecting to the spirit realm even though 2 mediums have encouraged me to one day hang out my own shingle. Yet, something holds me back. I know I have been on the planet for a long time and picked up many abilities in past lives but I stall. At this point, I feel spirit will open the exact door I need to walk through. If not, I will continue to find great peace and healing and wonderment when I walk into the woods. But, I will do it in silence. A song comes to me often when I push too hard and something snaps back at me, "Cruel to be kind, in the right measure..." Infinite love and intelligence is quite magnificent and humbling. Thank you for your response and perspective Jan.!
Beautiful! It’s so wonderful to keep in touch with that core part of us that always knew and will always know ‘spirit’ when we see it, regardless of what we are taught about it. As a Hindu, I wouldn’t think of faerie as ‘deva’. We have a word for nature spirits and faeries. It’s ‘yaksha’. ‘Deva’ refers more to gods and it’s hard to define that at least in English for me.
Hello Gowri, Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I am so appreciative of your insight and your willingness to share your first hand knowledge of deva. Deva = gods, yes totally, they occupy a higher plane of existence, perhaps more like archangels. It's very imprecise trying to compare two different systems of thought , but deva is a beautiful word and concept worthy of getting to know. Also, thank you for the new word, "yaksha" I'm delighted to now be acquainted with it.

I do hope your brownie goes with you! I also leave honey out in my yard for the helpful gardening faeries.
No. But we have mowed paths.

I've heard similar stories from others. Have you ever left an offering for them?

I so love that your orchids were literally drawn towards your faerie house. Feel free to post a link to your book in the comments.

We are all beings of light! Love this piece. Thank you!
Hi Kelley, so glad this resonated with you. We are indeed all Beings of Light!
