We’ve recently turned the calendar page from May, the month of Mary, mothers, and sacred marriages at Beltane, to June. We’re quickly moving to the magic of midsummer, the summer solstice, and St. John’s Day. This is the grand peak of the Sun, the pinnacle of the year when light and heat (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) illuminate, dominate, and influence the Earth, the animals, and us.
Early June is still a tender time when baby birds and animals are just emerging (I’ve seen many newly hatched songbird chicks, eastern cottontail bunnies, and tiny chipmunk younglings). Flowers and trees are still clothed in new, young growth. We, too, are still adjusting to the newness of the season, its weather, rhythms, and vibrations.
This year has been extremely unsettled with unusual portents in the Sun. There have been numerous sunspots, soaring solar flare activity, notably an X2.7-class flare on May 14 that caused radio blackouts across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, chunks of plasma shooting off the sun, massive holes appearing in the sun’s atmosphere, causing large amounts of electromagnetic energy to strike the Earth, and solar storms causing auroras as far south as Mexico. This heightened activity is part of Solar Cycle 25, which is expected to peak in July 2025, leading to increased sunspot activity and potential geomagnetic storms. This intense solar activity is responsible for the surge in earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and destructive weather around the globe.
We should be paying attention to the physical aspects of the sun’s unusual activity as well as the metaphysical implications.
The sun and its attendant spiritual and archetypal governing spirit have been understood for millennia as our spiritual guide and protector, directly linked to the earth and humanity. The Sun is our source of physical life, and our wise counselor in matters of the spirit, bringing illumination and enlightenment to the soul of humankind.
What are we to make of the volatile solar situation? What does it mean for the Earth and for us?
The first thing we know is that the Earth is receiving massive influxes of energy, so much so that it is overwhelming the Earth’s magnetic field and causing geological events with potentially deadly consequences. We have too much energy, more than we can handle properly. With an 'as above, so below' perspective, we see that humanity is receiving vast influxes of spiritual energy to the point of overwhelm. This energy is fueling both benevolent and malevolent forces, igniting a spiritual battle that is becoming increasingly apparent to the average person.
Spiritual activity, both positive and negative, is intensifying and spilling over into everyday reality. However, this is not a time to panic but a time ot observe and seek insight and understanding.
When I seek insight into the workings of the spiritual world, I have a series of lenses, or perhaps we could call them layers of backdrop, that I peer through. The most sweeping backdrop for me will always be the holy scriptures, which say very ordinary things about the sun, like “He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting.”
There are also very esoteric and allegorical things like, “Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them, he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.”
Then there are mysterious things like “And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, ...”
My second backdrop is the Tarot, a spiritual technology that, when used correctly, can display uncannily accurate depictions of situations through archetypes and synchronicity.
My third lens or backdrop layer often changes. It can be my art, a book I’m reading, the season, or something else. Currently, it is Rudolph Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul, which has had such a profound impact on me.
The verses of the year in the Calendar of the Soul may be seen as rhythmic sets of seven. Each set relates to an aspect of the human being: physical, etheric (energy or field of light), astral (feelings or emotions), I (ego), Spirit Self (human being as spirit being), Life Spirit (the higher true self), and Spirit Human (the highest human consciousness able to engage with spiritual truths beyond the physical world). These are Steiner’s unique classifications and need not concern us here, but the number seven does.
One invaluable way to explore the major arcana of the Tarot is to begin with card number one, The Magician, and lay the cards out into rows of seven cards. The rows and columns created offer deep insights into the soul’s journey through this life and beyond. Combining these two systems, Steiner’s classifications of the verses and the rows of Tarot cards yield some very interesting correspondences which will help me gain insight into what our Mystical Sun is saying to us.
This week marks the seventh verse in the Calendar of the Soul, which has been an incredibly active and volatile one for solar activity, as if our mystical spiritual sun were shouting to get our attention.
Leaning into my divining heart and mind led me to consider all of the “seven” cards in the Tarot majors to find some insight and understanding around this current period of heightened and unusual solar activity and what it might be trying to tell us.
The three “seven” cards of the majors are The Chariot, Temperance, and The World.
All three of these cards hold the ideas of control, power, and change. The Charioteer is situated on Earth (note the cities in the background and the square, a symbol of Earth, on his chest). He brings his archetypal pattern to our everyday lives. He successfully unites opposites; notice the Shiva lingam beneath the solar disc on the front of the chariot. His mission is to bring opposing forces under control, thereby establishing the order of the heavens on earth, seen in the starry canopy above him and the starry sunburst on his crown. In his left hand, the receiving hand like the Magician, he holds a wand, a symbol of the power necessary to bring order and control to the powerful forces that need to be integrated and harnessed for success in the present. His posture is static, and the cariot, a vehicle, remains at rest. He creates an orderly, ordained status quo.
On the Temperance card, we are greeted by an angel or the goddess Iris, messenger of the gods. Angels, of course, are also messengers of God, and so this card always indicates a divine message. On her head is the astrological symbol for the sun, a circle with a dot in the center. I find this very fascinating as we explore the meaning of the current heightened solar activity. At the top of her gown is the tetragrammaton, the unspoken name of God in Hebrew letters. Below that is a triangle within a square symbolizing both the Trinity (dynamism within God) and the dynamic changing forces within and on the earth. Far in the distance behind her, over the sacred mountains, a sun shining in the form of a crown rises. Closer to her yellow (or gold) iris, the fleur-de-lis, sign of royalty, blooms. With one foot on land (the physical) and the other in the water (the astral), she tempers energy by moving it from one golden chalice to the other. Energy flows back and forth in the lower spiritual realms, affecting what is happening on Earth. There is no doubt that energies, both spiritual and physical, are being manipulated right now. The Divine is aware of this, and powerful divine representatives, the Charioteer and Temperance, among others, are working. I sense a struggle to ensure that the flow of energy conforms to the Divine plan, despite opposition.
It seems to me that the primary message our Spiritual Sun wants to communicate is that there is a struggle of forces, a war in heaven, so to speak. There is a tempering, a mixing, a push and pull that is an unbalanced and unsettling reality right now. The process involves recalibration, which can be exhausting and disorienting.
In our final card, the World, we see the pure world soul surrounded by four powerful guardians. The World Soul is enclosed in an evergreen, everliving wreath of life, held together by cloth dipped in red, which seals the wreath and makes it secure. The World holds a wand in both hands; the powers of above and below, heaven and earth, are in her hands. Her mastery of all elements in all realms is indicated by how lightly and effortlessly she holds them. The World is often understood as the completion of a grand cycle, which launches us back to zero, the Fool, the soul tumbling out of the spiritual realms and back to the earth to begin the journey again.
I suspect that our Mystical-Spiritual Sun, through the actual changes, volatility, and activity of the physical sun and its effect on the planet, is sending a powerful message about the nature of the changes happening in human society. We are being shaken, mixed, confused, and finally tempered as we come to the end of a cycle of history. What has been is being alchemized, transformed, and retooled. It is not clear to me if what is to come will be something to rejoice over or something to lament. Only time will tell.
The second important thing I think we should know is that powerful, benevolent, divinely ordained forces are at work on humanity’s behalf, even as darker forces seek to destroy what is good, true, and beautiful, and "that is a very encouraging thought" just as Gandalf says in The Fellowship of the Ring," while speaking to Frodo during their discussion about the nature of good and evil and the hope that exists even in dark times.
This message has been a bit different from my usual topics. I’ve been sensing so much lately, and I offer this to you because I’ve felt a holy nudge to share what’s been on my mind in hopes of sending some encouragement your way in case you’ve been feeling these powerful energies, both physical and spiritual, with some foreboding or overwhelm.
I hope this post has found those who need it most.
Peace and Goodness my friends.
